Artist Statement: Just like mathematics, food is inclusive and recognizable – a universal language. My tondos invite the viewer in a natural and representational experience. They deliver immediate intimacy and satisfaction, comparable to walking through the aisles in a grocery store. Painterly pictures of pantry products compliment to portrait paintings. Unforgiving puns, idioms, and varying twists of language drive my visual imagination and become the genesis of my portraits. These portraits derive from entertainment I find through media on the Internet. Provisions paired with people propose a prominence and personality for each piece. Responding to the painting by looking into products and icons attached to our favorite snacks, I embellish food with characters and personification. This commercial attachment is the immediate representation of a beloved nostalgia and subconscious. Spontaneous and improvisational subject matter keeps me interested and mischievous in my practice.
