Gingerbread House Competitions

Objectives:

- Work with a group to design and build a gingerbread house
- Understand the processes of working with a team towards a shared goal
- Reflect on successes and struggles of working with a team

Materials:

- Gingerbread house sets
- Cardboard base covered with white paper
​- Large paper to cover tables

Steps:

- Students are grouped up into teams and are responsible for bringing in gingerbread house sets for the day of the competition. Groups can have more than one set, but they can not be pre-built.
- Teacher will provide any gingerbread house sets for teams that were unable to bring in a set.
- Leading up to the competition day, students go over designs and plans for their creations. with their groups.
- On the day of the Gingerbread House Competition, the art room is set up and the tables covered.
- Students are timed with how much class time is available and with clean up time in consideration.
- Students create their Gingerbread Houses and teamwork is key in this process.
- At the end, they clean up and appreciate each others hard work.
- The Gingerbread Houses are voted on by the community and sent out through a Google Forms
- The winning teams receive sketchbooks or art supplies as their reward.

Teacher Prep:

- Group students into teams
- Provide any gingerbread house sets for teams that did not bring one in
- Prep the art room by covering tables with large paper
- Prep cardboard bases and cover with paper, so gingerbread houses can be moved to display
- Create a Google Forms with photos of the houses to be voted on by community
​- Provide a reward for the winning teams
- Grade based off of participation and teamwork demonstrated
